Computers, networks and digital systems

Computers and digital systems consist of many layers that influence one another. Hardware, software, accounts, networks, storage and external services can all determine why something works, fails or later becomes difficult to maintain.

This website brings together practical and technical information for understanding, investigating and independently managing such systems. It ranges from diagnosis and backups to networks, telephony and the choices that determine how much control you retain over a digital system.

Ways into the information

Computers and devices

Computers and peripherals are built from hardware, firmware, operating systems, drivers and data. Problems and choices become clearer when those parts are examined separately and their dependencies are made visible.

Software and digital independence

Software, apps and accounts strongly determine what you can do with a digital system and who you depend on. Understanding how those parts work together helps you choose more deliberately, investigate problems more effectively and build knowledge yourself.

Data, backups and access

Data may be local, synchronised, held in an online service or stored on an independent backup medium. Access, retention and recoverability are therefore just as important as the place where a file happens to be visible at a given moment.

Networks and security

Networks connect devices, services and the internet. Looking separately at addressing, routes, name resolution, Wi-Fi, segmentation and security rules makes it clearer where a fault or risk actually arises.

Telephony

Telephony increasingly combines devices, numbers, providers, SIP, VoIP and sometimes a PBX. The technology becomes much easier to understand when it is clear which component performs which function and which information must be retained during a migration or change.

Questions

Much of the information can also be approached through a concrete question. The questions index brings together the questions currently addressed through the different knowledge resources and indexes.
