Understand software, apps and accounts

Many digital problems become unnecessarily complicated because everything is called “the computer” or “the internet”. A browser is not the same as Google, a Microsoft account is not the same as Windows, and a cloud folder is not the same as the local folder that synchronises with it.

Separating those layers also makes it clearer which party has the data, which password belongs where and what can be changed without breaking something else.

Questions on this page

What is the difference between an app and an online service?

An app is software on a device; its data may be stored locally or with an online service. Many apps are only clients for an account on a server. Removing the app therefore does not necessarily remove the data, while losing the account can affect several apps at once.

Why do I have so many different accounts?

Because the operating system, email, cloud storage, app store, social media and hardware manufacturer may each use a separate identity system. Make an overview of the purpose of each account and the recovery route attached to it.

Can I replace proprietary software with free software?

Sometimes completely, sometimes partly and sometimes not without consequences for file formats or collaboration. Test with real documents and workflows before migrating. The aim is usability as well as greater control, not a symbolic replacement that makes the work impossible.

Where can I practise this?

At Digital an existing system can be explained step by step. The digital self-reliance workshop focuses specifically on these everyday digital skills.
